Marcelo Gallardo agrees to coach Ecuador national team

Marcelo Gallardo has reached an agreement with the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) to become the new head coach of the Ecuador national team. Replacing Sebastián Beccacece, Gallardo is expected to sign a contract lasting until the 2030 World Cup, with an initial four-year term focused on the 2028 Copa América and the 2030 World Cup cycle.

This appointment marks Gallardo’s first experience managing a national team. He is widely recognized for his highly successful tenure at River Plate, where he won 14 titles, including two Copa Libertadores. His upcoming schedule includes a tour in Asia, with a scheduled debut against South Korea on September 24, followed by matches against Japan and potentially Panama or New Zealand.

Separately, the Ecuadorian Professional League (LigaPro) has announced the implementation of new FIFA-aligned rules to prevent time-wasting. These regulations, effective immediately, include stricter controls on delaying restarts and a requirement that any player receiving medical attention on the pitch must remain off the field for one minute to ensure continuous play.
