Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Joaquim Chissano advocate for multilateralism

Former Presidents of Portugal and Mozambique, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Joaquim Chissano, have called for the strengthening of multilateralism and dialogue to maintain global peace. During a debate in Lisbon titled ‘Portugal-Mozambique: Dialogue, Cooperation and Development’, Rebelo de Sousa argued that a multipolar world must be accompanied by multilateral mechanisms to address shared challenges such as climate change, migration, and social instability.

Joaquim Chissano highlighted existing difficulties within international organizations, specifically noting the United Nations and the African Union. He questioned the current objective of the United Nations in the post-World War II era and noted that the African Union struggles with self-sustainability. Chissano emphasized that consensus requires persistent dialogue and the building of trust.

Additionally, Portuguese President António José Seguro praised Chissano’s historical role in Mozambique, citing his contributions to the country’s independence, the end of the civil war, and the establishment of a multi-party political system. Seguro urged for the selection of leaders who prioritize peace as a fundamental condition for development.
