Marché des Enfants Rouges destroyed by major fire in Paris

A major fire destroyed the Marché des Enfants Rouges, the oldest covered food market in Paris, during the early hours of Monday, October 12, 2026. Located in the Marais district, the historic landmark, which dates back to 1615, was described by Lieutenant-Colonel Pierre de Bouvier as “completely destroyed.”

The blaze, which reportedly began around 3:00 AM to 4:15 AM, consumed approximately 1,000 square meters of the facility. The intense heat caused at least two-thirds of the market's metal structure to collapse. Approximately 150 firefighters and 50 emergency vehicles were deployed to combat the flames. While the fire caused devastating material damage to roughly 17 to 20 merchant stalls, authorities confirmed that no deaths or serious injuries occurred, though one firefighter reportedly suffered a minor medical episode.

Ariel Weil, the mayor of Paris Centre, expressed profound sadness over the loss of the cultural and culinary landmark but noted that firefighters successfully prevented the flames from spreading to neighboring residential and commercial buildings. The market had been a designated historic monument since 1982 and was recently ranked as one of the world's top street food destinations by Food & Wine magazine.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire, which remains unknown. Local authorities are working to secure the site and are seeking temporary premises to assist the affected merchants in resuming their business operations.
