Marchamalo to celebrate 400 years as a villa

The municipality of Marchamalo will celebrate the 400th anniversary of its status as a villa on October 2 and 3. This milestone commemorates the historical agreement by local residents to purchase the title of villa, which granted the town its own civil and criminal jurisdiction under the Crown and the Church, independent of any local lord.

To mark the occasion, the town has organized a Renaissance market and various cultural events. Highlights include the presentation of a new history book focused on that era, a theatrical performance recreating the public council meeting, and the inauguration of a replica of the original historical pillory (picota).
