Marche artworks from 2016 earthquake exhibit in Freising

The exhibition ‘SOS – Save Our Souls. Art, faith and identity between the Sibillini and the Adriatic’ has opened at the Diözesanmuseum in Freising, Bavaria. The showcase features artworks from the Italian Marche region, specifically from the provinces of Macerata, Ascoli Piceno, and Fermo, which were heavily impacted by the 2016 earthquake.

The collection includes pieces dating from the 13th to the early 17th century. The exhibition highlights the extensive recovery and conservation efforts undertaken following the seismic event, moving artifacts from damaged monuments to secure storage for cataloging and restoration.

Promoted by the Superintendency for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape and the Diocesan Museum of Freising, the initiative serves as a cultural bridge between the two regions. It aims to transform the emergency response into an opportunity for international cultural exchange and to maintain the connection between the recovered works and their original communities.
