Umbria launches €70 annual student transport passes

The Umbria region has launched ‘Umbria Vai’, a new initiative providing annual public transport passes for €70 to students. The program aims to reduce the financial burden on families and encourage sustainable mobility.

For secondary school students, the subsidy is contingent on having an ISEE (Equivalent Economic Situation Indicator) of €30,000 or less. Regional officials, including Pierluigi Vossi and Fabio Barcaioli, have defended the measure as a way to promote substantive equality and remove economic obstacles to education, as outlined in Article 3 of the Italian Constitution.

In contrast to the income-based requirements for school-aged students, university students and those enrolled in higher education institutes can access the €70 pass regardless of their ISEE level, provided they have a domicile in Umbria. The initiative has seen immediate uptake, with 1,400 subscriptions purchased on the first morning of availability.
