Marche hospital performs innovative scoliosis surgery on 12-year-old

Medical teams at the Azienda Ospedaliero Universitaria delle Marche have successfully performed an innovative, minimally invasive surgery on a 12-year-old boy suffering from severe scoliosis. This procedure, known as the ‘bipolar percutaneous correction without arthrodesis’ technique, is the first of its kind to be conducted in the Marche region of Italy.

Led by Professor Antonio Pompilio Gigante, the surgical team utilized a self-lengthening system consisting of two bars that expand progressively alongside the child's natural growth. This method aims to avoid the need for repeated surgeries and offers several advantages over traditional arthrodesis, including reduced blood loss, lower infection risks, and shorter anesthesia times.

The technique was studied by the Marche team in 2023 at the Necker pediatric hospital in Paris, where it has been utilized for several years. By implementing this method locally, medical professionals aim to reduce the need for patients to travel to other regions for specialized spinal deformity treatments.
