Marche Region Healthcare Faces Budget Deficits and Legal Costs

The Marche region in Italy is facing significant financial pressure within its healthcare sector. Regional President Acquaroli has issued a firm directive to local health authorities (AST) to reduce spending to meet programmed budgets. The AST of Macerata is specifically tasked with a 40 million euro deficit reduction, contributing to a broader regional goal of saving 200 million euros.

While AST Macerata Director Alessandro Marini has stated he does not intend to implement service cuts, concerns remain regarding how such large sums will be recovered without impacting healthcare quality. The region faces additional challenges as healthcare funding relative to GDP remains among the lowest in Europe.

Simultaneously, the AST of Macerata is dealing with mounting legal costs. The agency recently agreed to pay approximately 80,000 euros to settle a dispute with 31 employees regarding meal vouchers for shifts exceeding six hours. This settlement is part of a series of labor disputes in 2026 that have cost the agency nearly 500,000 euros in total.
