Marche region introduces healthcare exemptions for severe fibromyalgia
The Marche regional government in Italy has introduced healthcare fee exemptions for patients suffering from the most severe forms of fibromyalgia. This measure follows updates to the Essential Levels of Assistance (Lea), recognizing the syndrome as a condition eligible for exemption from healthcare costs.
The exemption specifically targets patients with very severe cases, defined by a score higher than 82 on the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire Revised (FIQR). These patients will be assigned the new exemption code 068 – Fibromyalgia Syndrome. The certification will be valid for a minimum of two years.
Benefits for eligible patients include one free specialist check-up per year, an annual cycle of ten group motor re-education sessions, and an annual psychiatric visit if necessary. Additionally, under the updated Lea, all individuals with fibromyalgia will be able to access thermal treatments at the expense of the national health service, regardless of the severity of their condition.
Regional Health Councilor Paolo Calcinaro noted that while this is a concrete response for the most fragile patients, it is a first step, as not all forms of the pathology are currently covered by this specific recognition.
