Marche region theaters added to UNESCO World Heritage List

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee has officially inscribed the ‘Italianate community theater system of the 18th and 19th centuries in central Italy’ onto its World Heritage List. This designation includes ten specific venues: eight located in the Marche region, one in Emilia-Romagna, and one in Umbria.

The eight theaters recognized in the Marche region are the Teatro Giovanni Battista Pergolesi in Jesi, Teatro Ventidio Basso in Ascoli Piceno, Teatro Serpente Aureo in Offida, Teatro dell’Aquila in Fermo, Teatro Lauro Rossi in Macerata, Teatro Feronia in San Severino Marche, Teatro Gentile in Fabriano, and Teatro Bramante in Urbania.

The recognition highlights the unique ‘condominial’ model of these historic sites. During the 18th and 19th centuries, these theaters functioned as social hubs where local citizens and communities participated in both construction and management. This model of shared ownership and social exchange allowed the theaters to serve as vital spaces for community life and cultural interaction.
