Marchena historical records reveal medieval meat trade importance
Historical documents from the Municipal Historical Archive of Marchena and PARES reveal the economic and urban importance of the meat trade in the town during the late Middle Ages and early modern period.
Records dating back to 1447 show that meat supply was a formal part of the economic system under the lordship of the Ponce de León family. The trade was significant enough to be included in official rent accounts, serving as a source of income for the lordship and a vital service for residents.
In 1545, the local council requested authorization to reform old butcheries located near the tower, proposing the construction of new sections specifically designated for beef and pork. This historical landscape once centered around the Puerta de Sevilla, which included various supply posts, inns, and markets.
