Marcin Gołaszewski addresses Polish-Ukrainian historical tensions in Strasbourg

Marcin Gołaszewski, a representative of the Association of Polish Cities, addressed the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg regarding the relationship between Poland and Ukraine.

While affirming Poland's continued support for Ukraine as a fundamental security interest for Europe, Gołaszewski criticized certain local political decisions in Ukraine. He specifically addressed the Lviv Regional Council's decision to designate 2027 as a year honoring the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and Roman Shukhevych.

Gołaszewski stated that the glorification of the UPA and individuals associated with massacres of Polish civilians burdens bilateral relations. He emphasized that local government resolutions can act as significant political signals across Europe. Following Polish protests, reports indicate the information regarding the resolution was removed from the relevant website, and Ukrainian authorities signaled that the decision might not be implemented.
