Poland: Mentzen sparks controversy and Romanowski receives safe-conduct letter

Polish political landscape is currently marked by two major controversies involving Sławomir Mentzen and the legal proceedings of Marcin Romanowski.

Sławomir Mentzen, leader of the Konfederacja party, has faced intense criticism following social media posts mocking the presence of women in the police force. Mentzen also sparked debate by suggesting that mandatory military service should involve minimal compensation, describing it as a form of work for the government where recruits receive only a small allowance for savings or entertainment.

In response to his comments regarding female officers, former police officer Sylwia Szary challenged Mentzen to undergo official physical fitness tests. This challenge was supported by Minister of Interior and Administration Marcin Kierwiński. Experts have argued that women are a vital pillar of national resilience and that gender should not dictate professional competence in uniformed services.

Separately, the Warsaw District Court issued a safe-conduct letter (list żelazny) to former Deputy Justice Minister Marcin Romanowski, who is under investigation regarding the Justice Fund. The decision, made by Judge Konrad Mielcarek, has caused significant friction within the ruling coalition. Government ministers expressed frustration, describing the ruling as a “stick in the spokes” for ongoing accountability efforts. The prosecution has announced its intention to appeal the decision.
