Marcin Romanowski granted safe conduct by Warsaw court
The Warsaw District Court has issued a safe conduct certificate to Marcin Romanowski, a former Deputy Minister of Justice and PiS lawmaker. This decision effectively prevents his arrest or temporary detention within Polish territory once the ruling becomes final. Romanowski is currently a suspect in an investigation involving alleged irregularities in the management of the Justice Fund and is accused of participating in an organized criminal group.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented on the ruling, stating that the primary error was Romanowski’s presence in public office in the first place. Tusk expressed indifference regarding whether the suspect is interrogated freely or remains in hiding.
The court's decision has sparked a significant conflict between the government and the judiciary. Minister of Justice Waldemar Żurek criticized the presiding judge, Konrad Mielcarek, suggesting the ruling was influenced by political connections. In response, Judge Mielcarek announced plans to sue for the protection of his personal rights. Zbigniew Kapiński, the First President of the Supreme Court, also issued a statement condemning the Minister's remarks as a personal attack that undermines the constitutional principle of judicial independence.
