Marcinelle mining disaster remains a symbol of Italian emigration history

The 1956 Marcinelle mining disaster at the Bois du Cazier remains a significant point of collective memory, particularly regarding the history of Italian emigration. The tragedy, which resulted in the deaths of 262 miners, included 136 Italian workers.

Beyond the immediate loss of life, the event represents a deep wound in the history of Southern Italian migration to Belgium. For many families and communities, the disaster is not merely a historical statistic but a lived experience that shaped generations of Italian-Belgian citizens and the communities they left behind in Italy.
