Marco Bonilla requests leave of absence from Chihuahua Mayoralty
Marco Antonio Bonilla Mendoza, the current Mayor of Chihuahua, has formally requested a definitive leave of absence from his position. An extraordinary session of the City Council is scheduled for Monday, October 5, to analyze and vote on this request. If approved, his substitute, René Xavier Chavira Venzor, will assume the role of Mayor.
Bonilla’s departure is tied to his political aspirations for the 2027 Chihuahua gubernatorial election. He intends to transition into a new political role within the National Action Party (PAN). On Saturday, October 10, a formal ceremony will be held in Ciudad Juárez to appoint him as the party’s coordinator for ‘the Homeland, the Family, and Liberty.’
The event in Ciudad Juárez is expected to be a significant political gathering, featuring the presence of PAN national president Jorge Romero Herrera and Chihuahua Governor Maru Campos. The appointment is viewed as a strategic move by the PAN as they prepare for the upcoming electoral cycles.
