Marco Odermatt defends high ticket prices for 2027 Ski World Championships

Alpine skiing superstar Marco Odermatt has defended the ticket pricing for the 2027 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. Following public outcry over costs, Odermatt stated that prices, such as approximately 170 Swiss francs (roughly 180 euros) for a men's downhill ticket in the finish area, are justified for an event of this magnitude.

Odermatt compared the necessity of high ticket prices to other major sporting events like Wimbledon, Formula 1, and the Champions League, arguing that top-tier winter sports must match the commercial standards of global elite competitions. Despite the controversy, demand remains high, with the first allotment of finish-area tickets selling out quickly.

Sports economist Christian Moesch from the University of Bern noted that fans are indeed facing rising costs, but explained that elite sports have become highly commercialized goods. While cheaper alternatives exist starting at 20 francs, the debate highlights a broader trend regarding whether live top-tier sporting events are becoming luxury items.
