Garlasco murder case: fresh probes spark family and legal responses

Italian authorities have reopened the 2007 Garlasco murder investigation, focusing on Andrea Sempio, a childhood friend of victim Chiara Poggi, while questioning the 2018 conviction of Alberto Stasi. The prosecutor in Pavia is reviewing new forensic evidence, including disputed DNA and the controversial “impronta 33”.

Family members have spoken out. Elisabetta Ligabò, mother of Alberto Stasi, broke her silence, saying she hopes for a fair resolution when her son is finally released. Marco Poggi, Chiara’s brother, ended his long silence in an interview on Quarto Grado, denouncing a year of speculation on his sister’s death and criticizing the lack of direct communication with investigators.

The case has also fueled media debate. Retired Carabinieri general Luciano Garofone and journalist Gianluca Zanella clashed on Rai’s “Storie Italiane” over the handling of forensic evidence. Prosecutor‑defense lawyer Giada Bocellari demanded representation for Stasi during the televised discussion, contesting claims about DNA quantity and degradation. The renewed scrutiny keeps the once‑settled murder in the public eye nearly two decades after the crime.
