Marco Rubio strengthens security alliances in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio concluded a diplomatic tour of South America, meeting with leaders in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru to strengthen security alliances against transnational organized crime.
In Colombia, Rubio and President Abelardo de la Espriella signed the ‘Barranquilla Agreements,’ which focus on reinforcing security, combating drug trafficking, and enhancing cooperation in civil nuclear energy and critical mineral supply chains. The pact also aims to strengthen institutional presence to combat illegal armed groups like the ELN.
In Ecuador, Rubio designated the criminal group Los Tiguerones as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and announced that the U.S. will request $45 million from Congress to support Ecuadorian security. Additional resources include $10 million for combating illegal mining and the provision of Coast Guard vessels and interceptors to bolster maritime operations.
In Peru, President Keiko Fujimori confirmed the country’s official entry into the ‘Shield of the Americas,’ a multilateral coalition led by the United States to combat drug cartels and transnational crime. Rubio described the move as the beginning of a ‘golden era’ in bilateral relations between Washington and Lima.
