Peru joins Escudo de las Américas security coalition
During a visit to Lima, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori announced that Peru has officially joined the Escudo de las Américas, a security coalition designed to combat transnational organized crime. The alliance, promoted by the Trump administration, includes 15 other Latin American governments and aims to enhance intelligence sharing and coordinated actions against criminal networks involved in narcotics, illegal mining, and extortion.
President Fujimori emphasized that the move would allow for faster information access and firmer action against borderless criminal organizations, while asserting that Peru's national sovereignty remains intact. The meeting also addressed the growing influence of China in Peru, particularly regarding major infrastructure projects like the Port of Chancay. Rubio expressed concerns that Chinese-backed projects could threaten data security and transparency. In response, the Chinese Embassy in Peru rejected these criticisms, stating that the Western Hemisphere is not anyone's 'backyard' and that Chinese investments are transparent and lawful.
This diplomatic engagement comes amid rising domestic security concerns in Peru, including a significant increase in extortion reports and recent states of emergency declared in Lima and Callao to address rising crime rates.
