Marco Rubio begins UN General Assembly week with NYSE bell ringing

Secretary of State Marco Rubio commenced a high-level diplomatic week in New York City by ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange. The event coincided with the start of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Rubio’s schedule included a series of bilateral and trilateral meetings with international leaders, including Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, and Republic of Korea Foreign Minister Cho Hyun. A key focus of the visit involves a Memorandum of Understanding on critical minerals with Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, aimed at securing materials essential for national security and advanced technology.

Additionally, Rubio is set to meet with representatives from seven NATO countries with Arctic interests—including Canada, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, and Finland—to discuss security and resource competition in the Arctic region. The diplomatic activities precede President Donald Trump’s scheduled remarks at the United Nations General Assembly.
