Marco Rubio explains US necessity for engagement with Pakistan

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has clarified that the United States must maintain diplomatic ties with Pakistan despite significant disagreements. During a visit to India, Rubio cited Pakistan's nuclear weapons capabilities and its strategic geographic location as primary reasons for continued engagement.

Rubio noted that managing US foreign policy requires maintaining relationships with various nations to balance competing interests. He compared the situation to India's ongoing dialogue with Iran, suggesting that diplomatic contact does not imply agreement with a country's policies. He further suggested that maintaining a relationship with Islamabad could provide the US with opportunities to discourage activities that cause security concerns for India.

While emphasizing the need for dialogue, Rubio reiterated that the United States remains firmly opposed to terrorism and those who sponsor it globally. Additionally, during his meetings in Mumbai with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Rubio expressed optimism regarding the imminent finalization of a trade agreement between India and the United States.
