Marco Rubio denies reports of planned resignation

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has dismissed reports that he intends to resign from the Trump administration. In an interview with The New York Times, Rubio stated that it has “always been my plan” to serve until the end of the presidential term and added, “I love my job.”

The speculation follows significant Republican losses in the 2026 midterm elections, which resulted in Democrats gaining control of both the U.S. House and Senate. Some reports, including those from Bloomberg and The Independent, suggested Rubio was weighing an exit to prepare for a 2028 presidential campaign or to distance himself from the administration's involvement in the Iran war.

The State Department and the White House have strongly rejected these claims. Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs Dylan Johnson characterized reports of a potential resignation as “completely baseless fake news” and a “fabricated hoax.”

Rubio, who also serves as national security adviser, declined to discuss his long-term political future, stating he will no longer speak about 2028. He has previously expressed support for Vice President JD Vance should Vance run for the presidency.
