Venezuela democratic transition: Rubio and Figuera reaffirm dialogue goals

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Venezuelan opposition leader Dinorah Figuera in Washington to reaffirm full U.S. support for the ongoing democratic transition dialogue. Rubio emphasized that the goal is not merely holding elections, but establishing lasting democratic institutions to ensure long-term stability and prosperity.

The third round of negotiations is scheduled to begin on October 14. This upcoming session will focus on critical institutional reforms, including the renewal of the Supreme Court (TSJ) and the reform of the National Electoral Council (CNE) to ensure political guarantees for all parties. The agenda also includes reviewing repressive laws and expanding political space.

Previous rounds of dialogue have yielded several milestones, such as the release of over 1,200 political prisoners, the restoration of access to more than 70 media outlets, and progress on the Organic Law of the TSJ. Figuera noted that institutional recovery and increased oil investment are essential pillars for Venezuela's progress and economic reconstruction.
