Marco Rubio to visit Iceland, Greece, and Portugal for security talks

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is conducting a multi-nation tour from October 5 to 8, visiting Iceland, Greece, and Portugal. The tour focuses on security, defense, energy, and economic cooperation among NATO allies amidst rising geopolitical tensions involving Russia and the Middle East.

In Iceland, Rubio is expected to discuss Arctic security and economic cooperation, following a recent US-Greenland security pact that allows Washington to establish two new military bases in Greenland. In Greece, Rubio will lead the sixth US-Greece Strategic Dialogue, addressing regional stability, energy security, and the situation in Ukraine. Discussions in Athens are also expected to touch upon the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project, which aims to link the power grids of Greece, Cyprus, and Israel.

Concurrently, the Greek Parliament is set to review three defense-related bills. These include agreements with Italy for the use of the Crete Firing Range, a partnership with Germany and the Netherlands regarding the Integrated Air and Missile Defence Centre of Excellence, and a military training cooperation protocol with Serbia.
