Donald Trump proposes naval presence near Cuba after Iran conflict

During an election rally in Fort Myers, Florida, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that American warships returning from military operations in Iran could make a stop near the Cuban coast. Trump described a scenario where a vessel would halt approximately 50 yards (45 meters) from the shoreline, after which he would dispatch Secretary of State Marco Rubio to negotiate an agreement with the Cuban government.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a concurrent message on social media, calling on individuals in Cuba seeking political change to establish a “discreet partnership with the CIA.” Rubio cited corruption and unfulfilled promises within the island's current administration as reasons for this call to action.

Cuban officials responded sharply to these statements. President Miguel Díaz-Canel accused the United States of having “ambitions of domination” over the island, asserting Cuba's determination to defend its independence. Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez rejected the threats, warning that the island's coastline, characterized by sharp limestone rocks known as “diente de perro,” would be inhospitable to those arriving with hostile intentions.
