Egypt receives $320 million in U.S. military aid as Rubio waives human rights restrictions

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has waived human rights restrictions to release $320 million in military aid to Egypt. The funds, intended for foreign military financing to purchase U.S.-produced weaponry, had previously been withheld due to congressional concerns regarding Egypt's human rights record, including reports of torture and arbitrary arrests.

The State Department cited Egypt's “helpful role” in mediating the ongoing conflict with Iran as the primary reason for the waiver, noting it was necessary in the interest of U.S. national security. The decision specifically references Egypt's assistance during Operation Epic Fury, the U.S. military campaign against Iran.

The $320 million is part of a larger $1.3 billion annual package of economic and military assistance provided by the United States to Egypt. While the waiver allows for the release of these funds, the State Department stated that the administration will continue to address human rights issues through bilateral dialogue.
