US Secretary Marco Rubio denies India-Iran trade deal amid intensified sanctions
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has dismissed reports of an imminent trade agreement between India and Iran following a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at the SCO Summit in Bishkek. While Modi expressed India's intent to expand and diversify bilateral trade, Rubio clarified that no such deal is currently being negotiated.
Simultaneously, the US is intensifying economic pressure on Tehran through a naval blockade and expanded sanctions. Iranian oil loadings have reportedly plummeted to an average of 250,000 barrels per day in August, a significant drop from previous levels. The US Navy has intercepted 86 commercial vessels attempting to navigate Iranian ports.
To further tighten the financial squeeze, the US Treasury Department has sanctioned Turkey's Golden Global Bank and two subsidiaries for allegedly facilitating Iran's sanctions evasion and managing funds related to the IRGC. Rubio warned that any nation providing mechanisms for Iran to generate revenue for terrorism or nuclear development will face secondary US sanctions.
