Marco Travaglio rejects Del Vecchio takeover bid for Il Fatto Quotidiano
Marco Travaglio, director of the Italian newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano, has formally rejected a takeover attempt by Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio. Acting through the LMDV Media group, Del Vecchio has initiated due diligence to launch a voluntary public tender offer aimed at delisting Società Editoriale Il Fatto S.p.A. (Seif).
Travaglio stated that the founding shareholders, who hold a 52% stake, have no interest in selling their shares. He characterized the attempt to acquire 82% of the company—a move intended to change the corporate bylaws and remove the 17% ownership cap per shareholder—as a mission destined to fail.
During an interview on La7, Travaglio emphasized that the newspaper remains one of the few without owners and will continue to operate without public funding. He noted the irony of the situation, pointing out that Del Vecchio had recently referred to the publication as ‘ratti del giornalismo’ (journalism rats) before expressing interest in the acquisition.
