Marcos Silas Neves de Souza found dead in Brasília federal prison
Marcos Silas Neves de Souza, the leader of the criminal organization Cartel do Sul, was found dead at the Brasília Federal Penitentiary on Sunday. The National Secretariat of Penal Policies (Senappen) reported that Silas was discovered unconscious in his cell during the morning's first routine of inspections and food delivery.
Senappen stated that the death was a suicide, though specific circumstances were not disclosed. Silas was a prominent figure in organized crime, specifically linked to cocaine trafficking. Investigations revealed that he had previously been a member of the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) before breaking away to establish the Cartel do Sul, a group reportedly allied with the Comando Vermelho (CV).
Silas had been in custody since 2021, following an arrest at a plastic surgery clinic in São Paulo where he was attempting to undergo procedures to alter his appearance and evade identification. Authorities have accused him of large-scale money laundering, alleging he used the proceeds from drug trafficking to purchase approximately 260 luxury apartments, primarily located on the coast of Santa Catarina.
