Marcus Smart joins Houston Rockets after Lakers contract dispute
NBA veteran Marcus Smart has expressed dissatisfaction with the contract offer provided by the Los Angeles Lakers, describing the proposal as “disrespectful” regarding his impact and performance. Smart, a former Defensive Player of the Year, felt the financial terms and lack of contractual security did not reflect his value, especially compared to other players he believes performed less effectively.
Following the disagreement, the 32-year-old guard signed a two-year, approximately $12.4 million contract with the Houston Rockets. This move reunites Smart with Rockets head coach Ime Udoka, with whom he previously worked during their time with the Boston Celtics. While Smart is expected to provide defensive toughness and veteran presence, he may serve in a rotational role behind established players like Fred VanVleet and rising talents such as Reed Sheppard.
Commenting on the situation, four-time All-Star Draymond Green noted the difficulty of securing high-value, multi-year deals after previously playing on a minimum contract following a buyout.
