Marcus Smart signs two-year deal with Houston Rockets

Marcus Smart has signed a two-year, $13 million contract with the Houston Rockets, opting out of his previous arrangement with the Los Angeles Lakers. The deal includes a player option for the second season and reunites the former Defensive Player of the Year with Rockets coach Ime Udoka.

Smart’s departure follows a season in Los Angeles where he served as a defensive leader and played a key role in the Lakers’ first-round playoff upset of the Rockets. During his tenure with the Lakers, he averaged 9.3 points, 2.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.4 steals per game.

Reports suggest the Lakers' decision to move on was influenced by general manager Rob Pelinka’s desire to prioritize youth and athleticism. While Smart’s exit leaves a defensive and leadership void in Los Angeles, the Rockets aim to utilize his veteran experience alongside their current roster.
