Marek Mikuśkiewicz, MarcPol founder, has died at 76
Marek Mikuśkiewicz, the founder of the MarcPol supermarket chain and formerly one of Poland's wealthiest individuals, has died at the age of 76. His family confirmed that he passed away on July 20, with funeral services held on July 27.
Mikuśkiewicz rose from trading at Warsaw's Różycki bazaar in the 1980s to building a massive retail empire. At his peak in 2010, his wealth was estimated at 3.9 billion PLN. However, his business faced intense competition from domestic and foreign retailers, leading MarcPol to declare bankruptcy in 2016 with approximately 215 million PLN in unsatisfied obligations and 700 creditors.
His later career was marked by significant legal and financial controversies. He was involved in numerous court disputes and investigations regarding potential fraud and transactions to the detriment of creditors. In 2021 and 2022, he was detained by police in connection with investigations involving significant financial damages and suspicions of multiple offenses.
