Marek Papała murder revisited as Poland expands cold‑case investigations

Former Prime Minister Leszek Miller broke his silence on the 1998 killing of former police chief General Marek Papała, calling it one of the most painful unsolved crimes of the Third Polish Republic. Miller said the murder "remains a painful unresolved case" and highlighted that the victim’s public profile and personal connections suggested a targeted hit, possibly linked to organized crime or illicit car‑theft networks.

At the same time, the Polish police have formalised specialised units known as “Archiwum X” to re‑examine the country’s toughest cold cases. These teams, operating within the Central Police Headquarters and regional commands, use modern DNA analysis, digital reconstruction and other forensic advances to reassess old evidence and witness statements, aiming to resolve long‑standing murders and disappearances that have eluded earlier investigations.
