Norwegian murder suspect Nawin Bayan avoided deportation before Maren Sømme killing
30‑year‑old Maren Sømme was found seriously injured at a residence in Nærbø on 26 July and died the following day at Stavanger University Hospital. An Afghan immigrant, Nawin Bayan, has been charged with her murder. Police say Bayan had previously been convicted of domestic‑violence offences and was ordered to leave Norway after a 2019 conviction, but the deportation was suspended for humanitarian reasons. He was remanded in custody for four weeks with a ban on correspondence and visits, and has pleaded not guilty. The case has revived criticism of Norway’s immigration and justice policies, highlighting how a man with multiple violence convictions remained in the country when the murder occurred.
The investigation also revealed that police had opened an assault case on 17 July after a prior alleged attack on Sømme. Authorities consider it more likely than not that Sømme suffered serious violence before her death. The suspect’s legal team maintains that her injuries resulted from health problems, not an assault.
