Maresca Hospital performs first Drug-Induced Sleep Endoscopy

Maresca Hospital in Torre del Greco has successfully performed its first Drug-Induced Sleep Endoscopy (DISE), marking a significant advancement in the diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS).

The DISE procedure involves inducing a controlled pharmacological sleep state. During this time, specialists use a thin camera introduced through the nose to directly observe airway behavior and precisely identify the location and nature of obstructions. This method is particularly beneficial for patients who do not tolerate traditional therapies, such as CPAP, or those requiring more accurate assessments to determine the necessity of surgical intervention.

The procedure was carried out by the Otorhinolaryngology team, led by Dr. Bernardino Cassiano alongside Dr. Nunzio Accardo and Dr. Grazia Maria Iovine, in collaboration with the Anesthesia and Resuscitation Unit led by Dr. Luigi Ferrante. The examination is provided as an outpatient service fully covered by the National Health Service.
