Marfin arson case: 46-year-old suspect remanded in custody

A 46-year-old woman has been remanded in pretrial detention by Greek judicial authorities following her appearance at the Evelpidon Courthouse. She is accused of having a supportive role in the May 2010 arson attack on a Marfin Bank branch, an incident that resulted in the deaths of three employees during large-scale anti-austerity protests.

The defendant, who was recently extradited from the United Kingdom, maintains her absolute innocence. Her defense lawyer, Kostas Papadakis, argues that there is no reliable forensic identification or satisfactory visual simulation linking her to the person seen in video footage from the attack. The defense further noted that a previous investigation into the same evidence in 2022 had been archived by prosecutors due to a lack of sufficient proof.

Judicial authorities described the woman as ‘particularly dangerous and committed to the group’s plan of action,’ leading to the decision for her detention. Two 42-year-old men accused as accomplices in the same case are already in custody. The defendant’s legal team intends to appeal the detention order.
