Marga Prohens faces heated debate over housing and evictions
A heated debate regarding housing policy and evictions took place during a control session of the Government at the Balearic Parliament. The session was marked by intense confrontations between President Marga Prohens and opposition groups, including PSIB, MÉS per Mallorca, and Més per Menorca.
The tension peaked when Iago Negueruela, the PSIB parliamentary spokesperson, questioned whether citizens or ‘vulture funds’ hold more rights, citing the case of Pilar López, a 65-year-old woman who spent the summer living in her car after being evicted. Prohens rejected accusations of meeting with investment funds and attributed the responsibility for ongoing evictions to central government laws, stating, “Evictions are lamentable and occur because their laws allow it.”
A highly emotional moment occurred when López, who was present in the audience, approached Prohens, telling her, “I voted for you.” Prohens stood to speak with her, and the two shared an embrace as the woman wept. Prohens reportedly told her, “They are using you,” before leaving the chamber visibly affected.
