Marga Prohens rejects housing restrictions affecting Balearic residents

Marga Prohens, President of the Balearic Islands Government, has stated that any future housing restrictions must not negatively impact local residents. This position comes as the European Commission discusses a new legal framework that could allow for limitations on the purchase of second homes in areas experiencing housing stress.

During a session in the Balearic Parliament, Prohens emphasized that while the government will study any legally viable and effective measures provided by the European Union, it will draw a “red line” to ensure that policies do not fall on the shoulders of local families and citizens.

The debate highlights a political divide in the region. Opposition parties, including PSIB and Més, have expressed support for restricting second-home purchases in high-pressure zones, even if such measures affect residents. Prohens maintains that current legislative tools are insufficient to implement such restrictions and will wait for the evolution of the European framework.
