Margareth Buzetti criticizes Antônio Galvan over feminicide comments

Senate candidate Margareth Buzetti has criticized fellow candidate Antônio Galvan for his recent comments regarding gender-based violence and the legal distinction of feminicide. Buzetti, who authored the legislation that established feminicide as an autonomous crime with penalties of up to 40 years, accused Galvan of minimizing the issue.

Galvan had questioned the legal differentiation between homicide and feminicide, suggesting that the death of a woman is not fundamentally different from the death of a man. He also suggested that domestic violence is linked to family financial instability and claimed that Mato Grosso is not a sexist state. Buzetti responded by stating that public figures cannot “wash their hands” of the reality of violence against women and children, noting that Brazil records approximately four feminicides per day.

In addition to her work on feminicide laws, Buzetti highlighted her role in the Senate in advancing the classification of vicaricide—the crime of killing a victim's children or family members to cause suffering to the woman.
