Margarita Robles defends military role in Ceuta and Melilla
Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles has expressed her recognition of the Armed Forces for their work in Ceuta and on international missions. During a video conference held on the eve of the National Day, Robles defended the professionalism of the troops in Ceuta, asserting the city's Spanish identity and praising their efforts despite facing what she described as “unjust criticism.”
In Melilla, the Guardia Civil celebrated its patron saint, Virgin of the Pillar, with officials noting the agency's successful resistance against a migration crisis in late July, where over 6,000 individuals attempted to cross the border. The Colonel Chief of the Melilla command highlighted the collaboration between security forces, the military, and the Moroccan Royal Gendarmerie.
However, the military response to recent migration surges has faced scrutiny. Reports indicate the government did not activate a planned military contingency during a mass arrival in Ceuta on July 30, opting instead for a political and diplomatic approach. Additionally, military associations have filed complaints with the Ombudsman regarding the working conditions in Ceuta, citing insufficient protection, unclear intervention instructions, and uncertainty regarding financial incentives for personnel deployed during the crisis.
