Margaritis Schoinas outlines Greek priorities for fisheries and agriculture

Greek Minister of Rural Development and Food, Margaritis Schoinas, has outlined the national position regarding the new Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). During an event focused on the challenges and opportunities for Greece, Schoinas emphasized the need to modernize and renew the Greek fishing fleet, prioritizing technological advancement, energy transition, and vessel safety.

Schoinas highlighted the importance of including fishermen in the decision-making process, noting that the policy must support the unique structure of the Greek sector, which relies heavily on small-scale coastal and family-run businesses. He also addressed the competitive challenges faced by European fishermen who must adhere to strict regulations while competing with products from third countries.

In a separate meeting with the Secretaries of the seven Decentralized Administrations at the Thessaloniki International Fair, Schoinas discussed the implementation of government agricultural policy. The discussions covered infrastructure, land protection, and the role of decentralized administrations in supporting primary production. The officials agreed to hold a follow-up working meeting to strengthen cooperation between the Ministry and the regional administrations to ensure sustainable development in agriculture and fisheries.
