Margherita Ferrari film explores 2001 Genoa G8 summit

Director Margherita Ferrari has presented her debut feature film, ‘Föa. C’era una volta il futuro’, at the Rome Film Festival. Produced by Paolo Sorrentino, the film offers a sensory and oblique perspective on the July 20, 2001, G8 summit in Genoa, which was marked by violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement.

Rather than a traditional documentary or militant reconstruction, the film utilizes a ‘fable-like’ approach, drawing from Ferrari’s personal childhood memories of the event. The title ‘Föa’ is derived from the Ligurian dialect word for ‘fable’. The narrative is centered on the experience of a four-year-old child living through the claustrophobia and chaos of the summit from within the confines of a home.
