Gatineau debates billion-dollar budget and infrastructure projects

The City of Gatineau is reviewing a budget featuring over one billion dollars in proposed infrastructure projects. Discussions among municipal councilors have become contentious as officials weigh large-scale developments against limited borrowing capacity.

With a residual debt capacity of 58.8 million dollars, the city faces difficult choices regarding major initiatives, including a potential tramway, projects north of Highway 50, and the development of two ice rinks in the east. While the long-term plan allows for a maximum borrowing margin of 685 million dollars, councilors warned that increased debt would lead to higher interest payments and potential tax increases for citizens.

Additionally, the city is considering investments in its cycling network, with a proposed 77.5 million dollars allocated over the next five years, though the specific distribution of these funds remains a subject of debate.
