Marhamah Rosli faces potential suspension over NAM allegations

The Malaysian government is considering a proposal to suspend Marhamah Rosli, the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), following allegations linking her to the New Age Movement (NAM). Dr. Zulkifli Hasan, the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), stated that discussions are underway and expert opinions are being sought to assist in the investigation. A written inquiry will also be submitted to Marhamah to obtain her formal explanation.

Marhamah Rosli has declined to comment directly on the NAM allegations in Parliament, instead calling for the principle of ‘tabayyun’—the Islamic practice of verifying information. She argued that it is unfair to judge an individual based on one-sided accounts without providing an opportunity for clarification.

The controversy began after a Facebook user shared a post regarding a program allegedly associated with Marhamah that contained elements of NAM, including claims of involvement with sorcery and charms. The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) has previously held a meeting with Marhamah to address these claims, which she has denied.
