Mari Carmen García Vela returns to host Informe Semanal

Journalist Mari Carmen García Vela returned to host the TVE program ‘Informe Semanal’ on October 10, nearly 30 years after her previous tenure. The appearance was part of a special broadcast celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Spanish public broadcaster, TVE.

García Vela, 84, previously hosted the reportage program for twelve years across two periods between 1983 and 1996. During the special edition, she reflected on the history of the network and the program, which has been on air for 53 years. The broadcast also included a report regarding Maricarmen Abascal, an 87-year-old woman whose death following an eviction has become a significant social and political issue.

García Vela’s career at TVE began at age 19 after she was selected through the ‘Caras nuevas’ contest. Her return has been noted for its connection to the history and evolution of television journalism in Spain.
