Giornate degli Autori announces 2026 award winners

The 23rd edition of the Giornate degli Autori, a parallel section of the Venice Film Festival, has announced its award winners. Argentinian director María Aparicio received the GdA Director’s Award for her third feature film, ‘Sometimes Sadness, Sometimes Rebellion’ (A veces me entra tristeza, otras veces rebelión). The award includes a €20,000 cash prize to be shared between the director and the film's international distributor.

The jury, led by Spanish filmmaker Carla Simón and including Sara Fgaier and Hania Mroué, praised the film for its ability to merge personal and political dimensions while exploring themes of labor, immigration, and privilege.

In the Europa Cinemas Label category, French director Robert Guédiguian won for ‘A Woman Today’ (Une femme aujourd’hui). The jury noted the film's empathetic exploration of women's roles in contemporary society. Additionally, Nicola Sorcinelli’s ‘Balkan’ was awarded the People’s Choice Award.
