Maria Beatriz Ocando to Represent Cesar at Imperialato Nacional de la Cumbia

Nineteen‑year‑old psychology student Maria Beatriz Ocando Foster has been chosen to represent the Department of Cesar in the Imperialato Nacional de la Cumbia 2026‑2027. The national folk competition, honoring the legacy of composer José Benito Barros Palomino, will take place from 7 to 9 August in El Banco, Magdalena, and will feature 13 departmental representatives.

Ocando, who began playing violin at age 11 and now studies accordion and percussion, said the event is an opportunity to promote the cultural heritage of the Caribbean region of Colombia. Her preparation includes dance rehearsals, cultural studies, runway training and stage conditioning, with judging based on folkloric performances, cultural parades, interviews and dance presentations. The Imperialato aims to preserve the traditional cumbia rhythm and foster its appreciation among younger generations.
