Maria Consuelo Cordoba approved for euthanasia after acid attack

Maria Consuelo Cordoba, a 58-year-old Colombian woman, has been approved for euthanasia following decades of physical and mental suffering. Her condition stems from a brutal acid attack perpetrated by her husband in 2000, which occurred after a dispute regarding her desire to live in Bogota rather than returning to their home region.

Since the attack, Cordoba has undergone nearly 90 reconstructive surgeries, yet she remains severely disfigured and dependent on plastic tubes to breathe. She has struggled with the inability to work and the high costs of medical care. While she previously expressed hesitation about ending her life—notably after a 2017 meeting with Pope Francis—she has since stated she is “tired of living” due to her constant suffering and lack of resources.

Health organization Capital Salud confirmed the approval of her request, stating that Cordoba will continue to be supported with “respect, humanity and dignity.” The case underscores Colombia’s legal framework, which has permitted regulated euthanasia since 1997.
