Maria da Conceição, recognized as the oldest person in Portugal, has died at the age of 113 years and eight months. She passed away on Saturday, August 22, at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de São Brás de Alportel, where she had resided for approximately 15 years.
Born on December 22, 1912, in São Brás de Alportel, she spent her entire life in the Algarve region. Her long life spanned significant historical shifts, including both World Wars, the Estado Novo regime, and the Carnation Revolution of 1974.
Affectionately known locally as ‘Rainha’ (Queen) or ‘tia-menina’, she was noted for her lucidity and sense of humor. Funeral ceremonies are scheduled to take place at the Church of São Sebastião in São Brás de Alportel.
